What Is GVM Compliance?
Your vehicle's Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the maximum legal loaded weight set by the manufacturer. When you add aftermarket accessories — bullbars, winches, canopies, drawers, or tow loads — that weight adds up fast. Exceeding your GVM is illegal under NSW road transport law, unsafe for other road users, and can void your vehicle insurance in the event of an accident.
- GVM Gross Vehicle Mass
- The maximum legal total weight of your vehicle including all passengers, cargo, fuel, accessories, and fluids. Set by the manufacturer and stamped on the compliance plate. Exceeding this figure is an offence under the NSW Road Transport Act 2013.
- GCM Gross Combined Mass
- The maximum legal combined weight of your vehicle plus any trailer or caravan being towed. Exceeding GCM creates serious braking and stability risks and is a separate legal requirement to GVM compliance.
- ATM Aggregate Trailer Mass
- The maximum loaded weight of a trailer or caravan as set by the trailer manufacturer. Must not exceed the towing vehicle's rated tow capacity. Relevant to all caravan and camper trailer setups in NSW.
- TBM Towball Mass
- The downward force applied to the towball by the trailer coupling. Typically 10% of ATM. Excessive towball mass reduces front axle load, steering control, and braking effectiveness — a common issue with heavy caravan setups.
GVM Upgrade Requirements in NSW
In New South Wales, GVM upgrades are regulated under the Road Transport Act 2013 and administered through Service NSW. Every GVM upgrade must be engineered by a signatory engineer, certified, and submitted for a vehicle registration amendment before the vehicle is driven on public roads at the increased Gross Vehicle Mass rating. Operating an unregistered GVM modification in NSW can result in fines, defect notices, and voided insurance — whether the upgrade is completed pre-registration or post-registration.
